Madison County Fair 170th Celebration

Janet Ambrose, Associate Professor of Textiles from Syracuse University, College of Art and Design, will be at the Madison County Fair on Friday and Saturday to lead us through the creation of her personal design work from the fiber animal to her final knitted and felted product.  Janet and her family raise Angora goats, Cashmere goats, and Alpacas on their farm in Jamesville, NY.   From their fiber she produces lace weight yarns and uses the computer and a computerized knitting machine to create her custom textile art.

Janet’s presentations in the Focus on Fiber pavilion will begin with an introduction to the animals on the farm and to the spinning mill housed there, including its 2.5 ton industrial Stoll Knitting Machine.  Her recent work enables her to integrate her long-standing love of photography with more recently acquired skills in fiber animal husbandry and knitting machinery to create beautiful and functional textile art.  For a preview, see her new website at www.janbrose.com

In the Focus on Fiber pavilion, there will be a wide variety of activities, demonstrations, animal exhibits, and fiber products on display.

On Friday and Saturday at 1:00 and 4:00, textile artist Janet Ambrose will lecture and show videos of her farm, fiber mill, and fiber art.

At 3:00 every day there will be a demonstration of shearing with Horned Dorset sheep.

bullet

At 11:00 every morning, you can hear an introduction to cashmere goats and to alpacas.

bullet

On Friday at 12:00, 2:00, and 5:00, Angora rabbit breeders will demonstrate grooming the rabbits and spinning their fiber.

bullet

Every day, there will be demonstrations of wet felting and needle felting, and children will be invited to try their hand at a project.  Younger children will have pictures of fiber animals to color.   There will be spinning demonstrations with wheels and interactive demonstrations with drop spindles. Visitors can see carding in progress and view displays of exotic fibers and fiber at each stage in the process from animal to finished product.    Vendors will offer fiber, yarn, and goods made with fiber from alpacas, Angora rabbits, Icelandic sheep, Finn sheep, and Angora goats.

The Focus on Fiber festival is also participating in an international project sponsored by Keep the Fleece  to raise $250,000 for a herd of fiber animals to be distributed by Heifer International.   Teams of knitters all over the world are knitting scarves that will be sewn together in October to make the longest scarf in the world.   What better way to celebrate the International Year of Natural Fibers than to visit the Focus on Fiber exhibit and knit a few rows on Madison County's contribution to the longest scarf in the world

We have made plans to have a tent next to the pavilion, so we could actually add 2 or 3 more people.

So - please pass the word on to anyone who might be interested.

Contact the Focus on Fiber Superintendent  for more information.
